The classrooms and hallways are adorned with colorful toys and happy faces. Children proudly carry their favorite toys, eager to share their treasures with friends.  At Toyday, we celebrate the cherished tradition of "Toyday" or "Take a Toy to School Day." Ditching the Plastic From Our Toy Shopping as well as Our Food Shopping

Image
At Toyday we have always been passionate about wooden toys but now more than ever have we seen the importance of making the switch. The shocking images on the recent series of Blue Planet II should be enough to convert anyone. I hate putting loads of black bags out but while sorting out our Children's bedrooms that's where their old broken plastic toys seem to end up. The wooden toys however, still look great and will be packed up into the loft for future generations. I'm going to try not to rant too much but we do seem to do it with everything these days. Buy cheap, buy lots and then throw it away when it's done. This is equally true of the toy market as it is of the supermarket and the clothing industry and any other industry. Buying wooden toys doesn't have to be expensive. For example you could start them off with a small railway set and then gradually create a bigger set by collecting all the add on pieces with expansion packs and tunnels. Most parents wo...

If you like all things British and hand made, then you will love Cornish Whispers

Image
If you like all things British, and hand made crafts like us, then you will love our new Cornish Whispers business. Who is Cornish Whispers? With a passion for all things hand made, and a love of Cornwall, Husband and Wife team Adam & Emily decided to start their own business where everything will be designed and made in Cornwall, and thus Cornish Whispers was born. Adam's background in carpentry tends to favour wood as his material of choice, although he also likes to play with acrylics, cardboard, leather, ceramics and glass and likes to mix traditional and rustic designs with a modern style.  Emily's addiction to beads and jewellery making was getting quite out of hand, and after running out of family members to make for, we had to find some new customers to appreciate her jewellery, all one-off unique designs. Both like to help each other and get involved with the design of every Cornish Whispers make. What we make Our  new website features a small but ...

Is Your Child Addicted To An Ipad?

Image
We often joke with Blake that he is addicted to his ipad and he agrees but is it no laughing matter? Blake is 6 and the ipad is the first thing he looks for in the morning and if we didn't intervene it would be the last thing he looked at before going to sleep. We have noticed that if he has been on it for a long period of time he turns into a monster and after speaking to another parent today I am definitely not alone. Blake starting using the iphone before he's even started school. He would come into our room while we were sleeping, take it off charge and start playing a game. That's when we set our first rule, no iphone before 7am! It's great that kids of today are so good with technology, it will probably be an essential part of life when they're older if it isn't already plus it definitely helped teach him to read. He could read words like 'play' and 'main menu' before he could write his own name. Now though, he definitely has signs o...

Use It or Lose It!

Image
We need to support our high streets. 12,000 shops could close this year, that's 2000 more than last year! With more people than ever shopping online there are fewer shoppers on the high street, despite this, rents and rates have continued to rise. Who can blame people for staying in and shopping on the web when to go to the shops costs so much in fuel and parking. Shopping in a physical store is brilliant though, what you see is what you get. You can see and touch the actual product your buying and be confident in its quality before you buy. Retailers are also great at inspiring you with shop and window displays. When it comes to buying a gift for someone there is nothing like your local independent for offering advice and ideas. I think we focus to much on where offers the best price instead of who we want to buy from. I have shops locally that I love and I'm going to make sure that's where I spend my money because I'd hate to lose them. Not only that but I do...

We Should All Do The #100happydays Challenge

Image
If you don't know what it is, it is to challenge yourself to take a photo a day for 100 days of something that makes you happy and then post it using the tag #100happydays to either facebook, twitter or instragram. If you're a private person you don't have to post the photos, just taking them could make you happier. The idea is not to go out of your way to do something fun and flashy to take a photo of but simply to go through your day as normal and take one picture of something that made you happy that day. Remember it's not about showing off how amazing your life is but appreciating it. Life can be so fast paced with all of us focusing on the next task ahead that stopping to take a photo can really make you appreciate that moment. At the end of the day when you curl up in bed instead of reviewing the blur of the day as a good or a bad one, you will have that captured happy moment to look back on instead of a mix of bad, good or just mundane. I bet you will find ...

Christmas Wish List

Image
Ok, so my excitement for Christmas has already kicked in. I think it kicked in during the summer time... But now it's actually socially acceptable to look forward to Christmas, as it's only 60 days away! So, for all you parents/grandparents out there, you know, at the end of October, it means one thing- the Christmas lists. I've already had lots and lots of children pointing at items in the shop, saying 'I WANT THAT FOR CHRISTMAS' with the parents having a look of stress/fear on their faces.   Not only are the Christmas lists (for the parents) being written but so are the Father Christmas wish lists. It can all get a bit hectic, and although it's a wonderful time, it's also very stressful when it's left to the last minute! Get a letter from Santa / Write to Father Christmas I went on to Pinterest and found some lovely Father Christmas list templates for children . Print them out and get your young ones to start writing what they...

Autumn Bucket List

Image
Autumn never used to be a time of year I particularly enjoyed. For some reason, this year, it's becoming my most treasured and appreciated season.  I'm loving the idea of wrapping yourself up in blankets, having the fire on (for those of you lucky enough to have a real fire, you understand it's particularly special), drinking cups of tea, hot soups, hot baths, wearing patterned wellies, walking in the leaves. Last week I went for a walk in the woods and it made me truly appreciate how the seasons change and how nature changes with it. It's almost slightly magical. This week I found these 'bucket lists' for autumn on places like Pinterest etc. A lot of them are American and from all different parts of the world. I thought I would write a blog especially dedicated to an autuumn 'to do list' for the times that you can really let go of the stress and just enjoy the parts of life you never have time for.   Here are a few ideas- Tell storie...

Fans, the oldest accessories still going strong

Image
This has been one of the hottest summers for the last decade and the good old fashioned hand fan has been a god send! The weather has been so humid and hot that on my handy silk fan has been my most important 'must have' accessory in my bag. Not only is a silk fan unbeatable at quickly cooling you down but it looks beautiful too! They can be found in an infinite amount of designs and colours so you can either get one that blends in with your outfit or it can be a statement piece to top off any image! One wasn't enough for me, I had to have the green, the red and the white one! I have fallen so in love with these that I decided to do some research and learn more about them. History Hand fans have been around for as long as history can tell and I think it's likely that they were being used in the stone age. I am making this assumption based on two facts, firstly that the mechanism of a folding fan closely resembles that of a birds wing, and that the Chinese chara...
