The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Image
The Very Hungry Caterpillar was written by Eric Carle and published in 1969. The children's book is about caterpillar who eats its way through a wide variety of food before emerging as a butterfly. Amazingly, the book has sold 30 million copies worldwide. The story highlights different life stages where transformations take place, such as- metamorphosis.  I personally as a child just adored the book, especially my older brother. He would recite the story again and again because he knew it so well.  In our Toyday shop we have the loveliest, Very Hungry Caterpillar wooden pull along for babies and toddlers that I wish myself and my siblings had at a young age! It's a perfect toy for children that know the story and the caterpillar's character. Have a look on our website- www.toyday.co.uk Enjoy the rest of your weekend! Alice

Learning the Tin Whistle

Image
I have just started to learn the Tin Whistle and I am finding it much harder than I expected to! As a child I had ear trouble and consequently never learned to play a musical instrument like the other kids. My singing voice was so bad I was asked to mime at the school concert so as not to let down the other choir members! I had corrective treatment when I was a teenager and I now enjoy almost normal hearing so I thought I'd attempt to master one of the many musical instruments we sell at Toyday. I began with the mini accordion but the noise that I was making was scaring the seagulls outside, let alone the customers, so I decided instead to try the Xylophone . I had a bit more luck with this and after an hour or so I was competently playing the music to Tetris which goes like this: Tetris E B C D C B A A C E D C B C D E C A A D F A G F E C E D C B B C D E C A A I decided to up my game a bit and moved onto the Tin Whistle as I remember my class mates having recorder les...

Our Marvelous Mobiles

Image
Today I've had three customers, all after another, admiring our different selection of wooden mobiles for their children/nieces/grandchildren. I've noticed how popular they are, especially for couples setting up bedrooms before the baby is due. It adds such a sweet quality to a room whether it's for a girl or a boy. They remind me a lot of my childhood in which I would stare for hours at the wooden one above my bed.  Our mobiles are made out of wood and are very multi-coloured, giving them a very vintage and traditional look!  I also love our different mobile themes such as, a princess mobile , farm mobile and my most favourite mobile- the noah's ark mobile. We also have individual birds with flapping wings such as, seagulls and parrots . Check out all of our mobiles on our Toyday website- www.toyday.co.uk

Classic Games- Bagatelle

Image
When I was 4 we used to go and stay with my Grandpa in Ludlow. My grandpa lived in a massive town house with a big staircase and cabinets full of antique glasses. There was literally nothing to do in this house but the one thing we did find, stored up in his lift and covered in dust; a bagatelle board . This game board was about 80 years old, something that my grandpa's parents would play with as children. It was honestly my favourite thing. I'm not sure what has happened to it since my Grandpa moved to a new house but I haven't seen one since today, as I opened up the shop and switched on the lights, seeing our own bagatelle board on the shelf.  This game is probably the most simple yet effective game for children. For hours and hours they can play on it, attempting to achieve as many points as possible (using marbles as the pinball) I think one of the most amazing things about having this game was collecting different marbles in different colours and sizes. Our Ba...

Dolls Dolls Dolls

Image
Today is going to be a very girly blog, because as I opened up the shop today, I noticed the different rag dolls we have. The reason this is such an exciting thing for me is because when I was 7 I bought my very own rag doll, from Totnes (the same make as the ones we sell) and I would save up all my Birthday and Christmas money and buy my very own little collection! I just loved everything about their hair and faces and all the detail in their clothes etc.  It's so lovely for me to see these dolls in our shop and to watch all the small children admiring them and being told ''not to touch!''  I also discovered that we have mini ones now that even have their own little character and costume. Which again is pretty cool! There was always something so exciting about having your very own doll to look after and play with! And every generation could agree with this!   Not only do we have this specific make of dolls but we also have different makes and characters. W...

Grow Your Own...

Image
http://www.toyday.co.uk/shop/educational-toys/magic-garden/prod_130.html I've always been so fascinated by toys that can grow! As a child I found the whole concept so magical and I still have a little glimmer in my eye when the children in the shop buy their very own 'Grow Your Own..' products to take home and try out. I remember my cousins and I being allowed to have our very own box of the 'Grow Your Own Crystals' during my summer holidays . We would spend so much time and use up all our energy everyday to keep the crystals in the right  temperature, the right light and with enough liquid to start to form as crystals. When I first started at Toyday it came to my amazement that we sell so many 'Grow Your Own...' products but for all different types of things. E.g. birthday cake , degree , a penguin , plants , a boyfriend and even a grow your own Jesus ! The growing product expands and grows in just a few days, children especially find it ...

Caps, Cap Bombs, Cap Guns - I loved them all!

Image
Cap guns became popular following World War 2, TV's were being watched all around the UK and companies began to create all different types, styles and colours of cap guns for children. Children all over the world saw their heroes fighting crime and therefore began reenacting their own scenes by collecting these toy guns . Cap guns were always a highlight toy during my childhood; especially for my 8 year old brother and his friends. I remember my siblings and I feeling almost like James Bond with our pretend, smokey gun shots around the house. Pretending to be spies or action heroes...we could play for hours and hours with our cap guns and bombs.   They really are something so simple yet so affective. What a brilliant toy! It's amazing to see them still being sold. They were a classic toy in the 50's, 90's and they seem to be just as popular now! The cap bombs produce a puff of smoke when thrown on the ground (completely harmless!) Similarly with the cap gu...

Toyday Marble Run: Product Review

Image
This set contains 24 brightly coloured pieces that can be built into a wide variety of elaborate constructions. Marbles race through a maze of cylinders spinning wheels, chutes and bridges, roll out at the bottom ready to start over again. Marble Run Summary The Marble Run is a really enjoyable activity and kept my 4 year old nephew entertained for a good couple of hours. Although it is recommended for 5 year olds, with some help it was easy enough to put together and as he gets older we can buy more pieces to add to this set for him to make more complex runs. The pieces are well made and fit together well to give you a stable structure. It also has a couple of examples for Marble runs on the box. I would highly recommend this kit, as it's a good way to get your child thinking, but having fun at the same time. Younger children will love building runs with your help, and then will be fascinated watching the balls whizz down whereas slightly older children will enjoy making new sl...

Image
Description This travel size Connect 4 game is from the Hasbro range of games, this is a scaled down version of the original game. The aim of the game is simple, get 4 of your coloured discs in a row either horizontally, vertically or diagonally to win. Take it in turns to slot your coloured discs in to the stand to try and get 4 in a row or to block the other player from winning. Only two people can play, male or female. It is recommended for people over the age of 6. Travel Connect 4 Summary Connect 4 is a simple but enjoyable game. The travel size makes it perfect to take on any long journey and be taken out your bag to play and pass some time. Only two people can play this at a time, but that doesn't matter too much with it's purpose being for travelling it would suite two people sat in the back of a car or sat together on a train, bus or plane. I use to love playing this with my Dad and could play all afternoon trying to beat him so will definitely be giving this as a ...
