If you like all things British and hand made, then you will love Cornish Whispers

Image
If you like all things British, and hand made crafts like us, then you will love our new Cornish Whispers business. Who is Cornish Whispers? With a passion for all things hand made, and a love of Cornwall, Husband and Wife team Adam & Emily decided to start their own business where everything will be designed and made in Cornwall, and thus Cornish Whispers was born. Adam's background in carpentry tends to favour wood as his material of choice, although he also likes to play with acrylics, cardboard, leather, ceramics and glass and likes to mix traditional and rustic designs with a modern style.  Emily's addiction to beads and jewellery making was getting quite out of hand, and after running out of family members to make for, we had to find some new customers to appreciate her jewellery, all one-off unique designs. Both like to help each other and get involved with the design of every Cornish Whispers make. What we make Our  new website features a small but ...

The Joy of a Den is in the Building of it

Image
You can make a den or hide out from just about anything. Above is a den we made with Blake using pallets and an old garden gate. The garden has grown up around it now making it look more attractive. He didn't want a shop brought Wendy house which was fine with us. He has set his den up as his laboratory, full of his 'potions'. A child's imagination seems to come alive in a den.   We were lucky enough to get enough snow to make this cool snow den. It took all day but it was worth it when at the end we lit a few candles inside and sat in it with some hot chocolate and cookies.   It's great that parks seem to have cottoned on to how much children love dens and you will often find one of these living willow dens in playgrounds now.   We sell a colour your own castle for £25 made from card that you simply slot together and then colour. Its great fun making a den together and this set really gets them involved. Then they can get dressed up and ro...

Getting Creative With The Latest Loom Bands Craze

Image
We don't normally follow fads and fazes as our thing is traditional but this latest craze to sweep the school yard is something we're interested in. Letting children get creative is something that has to be encouraged so we have a range of loom bands in stock. Loom band sets seem to just tell you how to make a basic bracelet so below I show you how to make a fishtail bracelet. Step 1. Take your first band and place it over two pegs (or two fingers if you don't have a board) in a figure of eight shape so that the band crosses over in the middle. Step 2. Add another two bands above but do not cross these over. Step 3. Hook up the bottom band on one side and bring it over the other bands to rest on top of them. Step 4. Do this on the other side as well. Step 5. Add a new band to the top. Step 6. Bring up the bottom band on each side again before adding another new band to the top. Step 7. Repeat steps 5 & 6 until your bracelet is the leng...

friendship-bracelets.net Has Inspired Me

Image
The last time I posted I was having a go at making friendship bracelets. Since then I have discovered friendship-bracelets.net . It is a great resource full of different patterns for you to follow or you can even design your own patterns on there. Here is a photo of some of the ones I've had a go at. The most strings I've used is 14 but there are designs for up to 66 strings. Some of the designs are amazing, go have a look!

Remembering How To Make Friendship Bracelets

Image
As a child I would spend hours making friendship bracelets for my friends and myself but I haven't made one since the 90's. I have been trying to re-learn how to make them and thought I would share. 1. For this bracelet I'm going to use four colours as I'm just starting up and don't want to get too complex. To measure the length to cut the threads I take a length hold it up to my nose and pull it down to my finger tips, then do it again as I'm going to loop it at the top so I want one length long enough to be two strings in the bracelet. It's always better to have too much thread than not enough. I do this for each colour and after cutting them to the same length I put them all together fold them in half and tie off at the top with a simple knot to secure them all together leaving enough thread at the top to tie the bracelet around my wrist when it's finished. I have taped the loop to the table to hold the bracelet in place while I work on ...

Traditional Christmas.

Image
I am in love with all things traditional, classic and vintage. For example furniture, kids toys, kitchen ware etc. This year for Christmas i have to buy all brand new Christmas decorations, and i know exactly what im going to be getting. I personally think that the traditional Christmas decorations look so charming compared to some new ones. Here's some pictures as an example. The classic red greens, and golds of Christmas bring warmth to the room, nothing better then keeping warm inside on the sofa watching Christmas films being surrounded by beautiful decorations.  Here at today we have a great range of traditional Christmas decorations that you can make yourself.   Christmas Tree Decorations  Christmas Decorations   Metallic paper chains  Metallic Paper Chains So why not get the Christmas fun started early, get your family together to make your own Christmas decorations. 34 days til...

Christmas Wish List

Image
Ok, so my excitement for Christmas has already kicked in. I think it kicked in during the summer time... But now it's actually socially acceptable to look forward to Christmas, as it's only 60 days away! So, for all you parents/grandparents out there, you know, at the end of October, it means one thing- the Christmas lists. I've already had lots and lots of children pointing at items in the shop, saying 'I WANT THAT FOR CHRISTMAS' with the parents having a look of stress/fear on their faces.   Not only are the Christmas lists (for the parents) being written but so are the Father Christmas wish lists. It can all get a bit hectic, and although it's a wonderful time, it's also very stressful when it's left to the last minute! Get a letter from Santa / Write to Father Christmas I went on to Pinterest and found some lovely Father Christmas list templates for children . Print them out and get your young ones to start writing what they...

Autumn Bucket List

Image
Autumn never used to be a time of year I particularly enjoyed. For some reason, this year, it's becoming my most treasured and appreciated season.  I'm loving the idea of wrapping yourself up in blankets, having the fire on (for those of you lucky enough to have a real fire, you understand it's particularly special), drinking cups of tea, hot soups, hot baths, wearing patterned wellies, walking in the leaves. Last week I went for a walk in the woods and it made me truly appreciate how the seasons change and how nature changes with it. It's almost slightly magical. This week I found these 'bucket lists' for autumn on places like Pinterest etc. A lot of them are American and from all different parts of the world. I thought I would write a blog especially dedicated to an autuumn 'to do list' for the times that you can really let go of the stress and just enjoy the parts of life you never have time for.   Here are a few ideas- Tell storie...

Adventures

Image
It's now coming to that time of year when summer is very quickly coming to an end and autumn is about to creep up on us. However, that doesn't  mean it has to be the end of our fun! Especially for children (even if it means they have to go back to school this September!)  Here at Toyday we sell compasses , binoculars , magnifiers , bug boxes and more so that children can use local nature trails and woods to explore nature. As long as they are fully equipped with raincoats and wellies it can be done in all weather! Autumn honestly is the perfect time to explore nature and to see the season change. There are so many things to look at e.g. different birds, leaves, insects and can use up hours of fun on the weekends.  Have a look at our 'adventure' products online and enjoy the rest of your summer before the school term starts again! www.toyday.co.uk
