The Pet Rock

Image
The pet rock was a novelty item that gained immense popularity in 1975. It was the brainchild of Gary Dahl, an advertising executive from California. Dahl came up with the idea as a lighthearted joke and decided to package and sell rocks as pets. The pet rock came in a cardboard box, resembling a pet carrier, complete with air holes, a bed of straw, and a humorous instruction manual. Each box contained a smooth river stone, which was meant to serve as the pet rock. The concept behind the pet rock was that it required minimal care and offered the appeal of a low-maintenance "pet." Since rocks do not need feeding, grooming, or attention, it was a humorous and unconventional twist on the idea of pet ownership. Despite its simplicity, the pet rock became a cultural phenomenon and enjoyed massive success. It captured the public's imagination and tapped into the humor and satire of the time. The pet rock's popularity was attributed to its novelty and the clever marketing ...

Paddington

Image
Have you seen "Paddington"? I did last Tuesday and loved him. Its an endearing tale of the adventures of the young bear's journey from Darkest Peru to London, and his  love for Marmalade sandwiches. The animation of Paddington is unbelievable, I was total convinced by his adorable facial  expressions and polite mannerisms. Its worth a watch if your in a christmasy cuddly mood.   Paddington is quite an interesting character. The story in itself brings up the issues of immigration. I was reading an article that reviews the film from an immigration lawyers point of view. This bear has this idealized vision of London to be a friendly, welcoming and polite place. When in fact he finds it is the opposite. Dose this bring up a prospective of how London is viewed from an outsider?   However this story does have a happy ending, and that's what I like to see. If I saw this little bear at a station I would definitely take him home. If you fancy having a bea...

Did you know about the new cinema in Totnes?

Image
Okay well it's a not so new. The Romoney cinema located where the library used to be behind Harberton Arts, originally opened in 1946.  It showed films on Thursday nights for a traveling cinema. Then became full time, seating 161 movie fans and showing the greats until October 1964 when it closed. Now all these years later there are plans to re open it for the people of Totnes to enjoy. Last week they opened  the space so people could come and share ideas and visions on how the cinema should be. When I went in there, the space looked incredible! So different from what it was before. Loads of people had given their ideas on what films they wanted to see, what food they want to eat and what they wanted from the space. The notice board was stuffed with suggestions and words of encouragement. It's a great idea and I am very excited to see how it works out. Personally I would like to see them supporting local film makers and showing interdependent shorts before the featur...

Do You Remember Your First Computer Games?

Image
Blake is only 5 and already he has started saving up for the very latest Xbox although he has told us he also wants and Ipad. Little does he know that when he is our age these will be the devises he will have nostalgic memories of playing 'retro' computer games on. I remember our first Atari games console complete with joy stick and block like games that pushed into the top. We only had 4 games, our favourites being Space Invaders and Pacman. Next we had a commodore 64 that my parents brought second hand. It was definitely one way of teaching children patience as it took so long to load a game. When we got bored of the games that came with it I spent my Birthday money on a Quick Draw Mcgraw game. Adam has equally fond memories of his first Spectrum computer which is where he did his first computer programming. A skill which later proved very useful when designing all the Toyday computer systems that we all use on a daily basis.

Fun Father's Day GIft Ideas

Image
One of the best parts of parenthood for my father, was the excuse it gave him to indulge me in the toys he wished he'd had as a child. He thought that his darling daughter deserved a scalextric set for her 3rd birthday,so if I was being fair to him I'd get him a baby doll this fathers day. But I'm not that mean, so I think I'll try and get him something nostalgic from our  traditional range of toys. My dad grew up on rations in post war London and had the kind of toys that his father could make for him out of wood . Throughout my childhood a game of cards or dice was a daily reward for finishing my homework and when I was old enough we moved onto Chess . I grew up thinking I was an excellent Chess player but once I played a game against my friend Alex and realised that Dad had been letting me win just to make me happy. Looking back I wonder how many other games he tactically lost. So how do I  find a game that will bring back his childhood me...

Classic Games- Bagatelle

Image
When I was 4 we used to go and stay with my Grandpa in Ludlow. My grandpa lived in a massive town house with a big staircase and cabinets full of antique glasses. There was literally nothing to do in this house but the one thing we did find, stored up in his lift and covered in dust; a bagatelle board . This game board was about 80 years old, something that my grandpa's parents would play with as children. It was honestly my favourite thing. I'm not sure what has happened to it since my Grandpa moved to a new house but I haven't seen one since today, as I opened up the shop and switched on the lights, seeing our own bagatelle board on the shelf.  This game is probably the most simple yet effective game for children. For hours and hours they can play on it, attempting to achieve as many points as possible (using marbles as the pinball) I think one of the most amazing things about having this game was collecting different marbles in different colours and sizes. Our Ba...

Who invented the Rubik's cube?

Image
all images taken from Google images The Rubik's Cube : Created by Ernő Rubik; a Hungarian sculptor and Professor of architecture. From simply being a small invention to becoming the German Game Of The Year in 1980, the Rubik's Cube will always go down in history as the puzzle sensation! Over the years many have attempted to achieve 'world records' to match up each cube with the correct colour under a certain time limit. Ronald Brinkmann holds the World Record at the West German Championships in 1982, completing the cube in an incredible 19 seconds. The game is very time consuming but also challenges a persons patience, focus and above all; colour coordination. During World War 2, Ernő Rubik was born in Budapest, Hungary on July 13th, 1944. His father was a flight engineer and his mother, a poet. Ernő graduated at the age of 22 from the Technical University, Budapest Faculty of Architecture . He then went on to do postgraduate studies in sculpting ...
