My Baby Loves to Play with Dangerous Things

Image
My 8 month year old seems to home in on anything dangerous. His two particular favourites are wires and carrier bags. I remember Blake being exactly the same when he was small, he had a penchant for daddy's tools. Obviously I can't let baby Oakley play with wires for fear he may get electrocuted but there are alternatives I have found which he seems to like just as much. For Christmas we gave him an Owl Winkle from Manhattan Toy. The Winkle has been a popular baby toy for a few years now and the owl version is a cute new take on it. It make a rattle noise when you shake it and has lots of colourful rubber wires looping out from the center. Not only does it give Oakley safe wires that he can play with but it is great for him to chew on while he's teething. As he gets a little older the wooden bead frame from Melissa and Doug will give him a new challenge whilst fulfilling his need for wires. Carrier bags form a challenge, if he sees one, it doesn't matter if i...

Stuck for newborn gift ideas this new year? Don't stress, you're not the only one...

Image
It has become apparent to me recently that I am at that age where all my friends are having babies. Now, this suits me fine - I adore babies - I can have lots of cute cuddle time and then hand baby back when it's nappy changing time! However, as someone whose closest thing to having babies is her kitty cats, I do sometimes find it difficult to choose newborn gifts. Do I get something practical? Do I get something for them to wear that they will grow out of in two weeks time? I really hate to buy presents that aren't usable, or enjoyable, so sometimes the prospect of purchasing for a newborn can be rather daunting. I am sure I am not the only baby-free (not yet crazy) cat lady around who is in this boat, and for that reason I decided it would be a good idea to share a few of my favourites...   My favourites   Girls at play For lovely little ladies, I absolutely adore this vintage inspired "Girls at play" baby grow currently on sale in our Totnes and Looe s...

Oakley's Woodland Nursery

Image
Having chosen the name Oakley for our son it seemed only right to give him a woodland themes nursery. I love toadstools, owls and all things woodland so lets hope he will too. The toy box had been left in Toyday Totnes and inherited when we moved in 6 years ago. It was mouldy and falling to pieces so Adam took it home and fixed it up. The wooden tree house is something we used to sell but can no longer get, we made sure we kept back the very last one for ourselves. The rocking chair we brought from Totnes market when I was pregnant with Blake and it's still going strong. From left to right on Oakley's shelf we have a Toyday Bear , Gruffalo Money Box , Steiff Bear (a gift from a grandparent), Peter Rabbit Beanie , Gluton Activity Hedgehog , Toadstool Rattle , Patchwork Owl and a Rabbit Nightlight . Underneath is a string of toadstool fairy lights . My multi talented husband has made this very handy shelving unit for Oakley's room which is filled with his many...

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Image
The Very Hungry Caterpillar was written by Eric Carle and published in 1969. The children's book is about caterpillar who eats its way through a wide variety of food before emerging as a butterfly. Amazingly, the book has sold 30 million copies worldwide. The story highlights different life stages where transformations take place, such as- metamorphosis.  I personally as a child just adored the book, especially my older brother. He would recite the story again and again because he knew it so well.  In our Toyday shop we have the loveliest, Very Hungry Caterpillar wooden pull along for babies and toddlers that I wish myself and my siblings had at a young age! It's a perfect toy for children that know the story and the caterpillar's character. Have a look on our website- www.toyday.co.uk Enjoy the rest of your weekend! Alice

Our Marvelous Mobiles

Image
Today I've had three customers, all after another, admiring our different selection of wooden mobiles for their children/nieces/grandchildren. I've noticed how popular they are, especially for couples setting up bedrooms before the baby is due. It adds such a sweet quality to a room whether it's for a girl or a boy. They remind me a lot of my childhood in which I would stare for hours at the wooden one above my bed.  Our mobiles are made out of wood and are very multi-coloured, giving them a very vintage and traditional look!  I also love our different mobile themes such as, a princess mobile , farm mobile and my most favourite mobile- the noah's ark mobile. We also have individual birds with flapping wings such as, seagulls and parrots . Check out all of our mobiles on our Toyday website- www.toyday.co.uk

What Toys to Buy for a New Baby

Image
While you wait for the grand arrival of your little one you find yourself surrounded by things to buy but what do they actually need? There is so much temptation out there of cute outfits and adorable baby things. You want to be prepared which is a good idea as you won't have much time when baby arrives but you have to bear in mind that other people may buy lots of gifts for baby. The biggest mistake tends to be buying lots of clothes in size 0-3 months as this seems to be the size that everybody buys as presents when in actual fact most babies wear the newborn size (about 11lb) to start off with or maybe even smaller sizes. When buying a rattle you need to find one that will be easy to grip for little hands as like everything else, gripping is something that they will have to learn. For the same reason I would recommend looking for one that is lightweight. The other thing to consider is that everything will go in the mouth and they may start teething as early as three months o...

Toy Trains

Image
One of our most popular selling items in Looe was the train vehicle puzzle which unfortunately is no longer available. It was on display in the window and all day long would trundle around on its never ending track and would always draw attention. Originally there was a train puzzle, racing car, tractor, police car and spaceship but they have all slowly been discontinued. Looking for a replacement for the vehicle puzzle we are now selling this brightly coloured little battery operated train which will run on all the wooden railway tracks such as Brio, Thomas and other leading makes. At the front it has a little headlight and on the top is a button which can be moved to make the train either go forwards or backwards. Very clever ly there is a magnet on the rear which will allow it to be connected to other train carriages which it will pull along behind, and it will make a lovely addition to our First Wooden Train Set right up our 40 Piece Wooden T rain Set . We also now have a range...

Tweedy Push Along Review

Image
Push alongs are great for encouraging Children to walk and improve their balance. This cute and colourful Tweedy push along flaps his wings as you push him along. The handle features a nicely rounded end so the child can hold onto the stick a bit easier. The stick can be detached from Tweedy for easy storage. I bought this for my Nephew as a Christmas present and the product definitely lived up to it's expectations! At first he did just try to carry it around, but once he knew how to use it, not only did it encourage him to walk better, but he also found the flapping of the birds wings highly amusing and it was funny to watch him push it around from room to room! The only negative with him playing with it so much is that it will begin to look worn quite noticeably on the wheels. This fairly simple and reasonably priced toy is perfect for helping young ones with their spatial thinking, hand and eye coordination and balance. Pro’s and Cons Pros - Great for encouraging walking a...

Ecotronic - NO BATTERIES REQUIRED

Image
Baby's love toys that they can make light up and make noises by pressing buttons. The only down side to these types of toys is that they usually need endless supplies of batteries which is not only annoying and expensive but is bad for the environment as well. If your anything like me, it takes a while before you a) remember to buy batteries and then b) find the time to unscrew the toy and replace the batteries. This is my main reasoning behind stocking our two new products the Eco Toy Telephone and the Eco Toy Radio. Both toys are dynamo powered, simply wind up or shake - NO BATTERIES REQUIRED!! Absolutely brilliant in my opinion and we will diffinately be adding more products to the range in the future.

New Supplier

Image
We have discovered a new supplier of wooden toys and baby toys. The wooden toys have yet to be photographed before they can be added to the website but some new baby toys are up already. We have a selection of new soft baby books that are great value. Something I saw at a friends house, that Blake loved, is a mirror that roles along that they can chase which around 6 months is a great way to encorage them to crawl and I was quite pleased to find a version. We also get asked for keys for babies all the time, well now we have them!
